Classes are suitable for the entire pregnancy. We recommend an early start, from 12 weeks of pregnancy. Classes are booked in blocks of 10 on a regular day, with an extension possible up to 38 weeks of pregnancy. A partnerclass is included, once in a block of 10. Missed classes can be made up for during the course, at one of the other timeslots, by arrangement and when there is space.
Yoga cultivates a sense of well being, self confidence and trust in the body and mind. Regular practice helps to develop flexibility, strength and stability. In this way, yoga can serve as a great aid in preventing many of the common aches and pains of pregnancy, offering invaluable support during labour and birth.
Sandra’s pregnancy yoga classes are both active and gentle. Information specific to pregnancy, labour and birth is interwoven with a series of yoga postures in each class. Some of the themes in class include:
- good posture to avoid back pain. Finding support through connectedness with the earth
- developing skills to turn within through breathing and deep relaxation
- movements for labour and positions for birth
- massage for tension release
- partner work for support during labour
- pelvic floor exercises
- information on anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and birth
Sandra Kirchner studied pregnancy yoga and the 'Active Birth' method with Janet Balaskas, as well as 'Birthlight' and postnatal yoga with Francoise Freedman. Both are internationally renowned birth educators and yoga teachers who are the authors of many books. For nearly ten years Sandra has guided women through their pregnancy. She combines more than fifteen years experience as a yoga teacher with the knowledge and inspiration she has gained from Janet's and Francoise's methods.
The group is taught in English and / or Dutch to a maximum of 16 women on Wednesday and Thursday and 8 women on Saturday.
